Long ago, when animals started working for Man, there was a lazy Camel who lived in a desert. He didn’t want to work and only said “Humph!” when asked to help.
On Monday, the Horse asked the Camel to trot, but the Camel said “Humph!” The Horse told Man. Then the Dog asked the Camel to fetch and carry, but the Camel said “Humph!” The Dog told Man. The Ox asked the Camel to plow, but the Camel said “Humph!” The Ox told Man.
At the end of the day, Man told the Horse, Dog, and Ox that since the Camel wouldn’t work, they had to do extra work. This made them angry. They met to talk about it, and the Camel just laughed and said “Humph!” again.
Then the Djinn of All Deserts came and asked the animals what was wrong. They told him the Camel was lazy and wouldn’t work. The Djinn found the Camel looking at his reflection in water, doing nothing.
The Djinn told the Camel, “You’re making the others work more because you’re lazy!” The Camel said “Humph!” again. The Djinn warned him not to say it again and told him to work. But the Camel said “Humph!” once more, and suddenly his back puffed up into a big hump.
The Djinn said, “That’s your hump! You got it because you didn’t work for three days. Now you can work for three days without eating, living off your hump. Go join the others and behave!”
So, the Camel went to work with the Horse, Dog, and Ox, and he still has his hump today. But he never caught up on the three days he missed, and he never learned to behave.
