THE WEIGHT OF YESTERDAY

Posted on March 10, 2026 by Selected Best Stories

In a small peaceful village beside the river, there lived a man named Samuel. Samuel was known far and wide for his remarkable skill as a boatman. Every single day, he ferried villagers across the wide river, guiding them safely through calm waters and fierce storms alike. His hands were steady, his eyes sharp, and his knowledge of the river was second to none.

But Samuel carried something heavy — not in his hands, not on his boat, but deep inside his heart. Years ago, Samuel had lost his younger brother Thomas in a tragic accident on the very same river he now sailed each day. Since that dark afternoon, Samuel blamed only himself. Every night, when he closed his eyes, he saw the past replaying like a broken reel. What had gone wrong? What could he have done differently? His days became thick with regret.

He started moving slower. His warm smile faded. The villagers noticed that Samuel was no longer the cheerful man who used to laugh loudly by the bonfire at night, telling funny stories and singing old songs. Something had gone out of him — like a lantern with no more oil.

One bright morning, a little girl named Emily came skipping to Samuel’s boat. She had big, curious blue eyes and a heart full of questions. She looked up at Samuel and asked softly, “Uncle Samuel, why do you always look so sad?”

Samuel sighed deeply and replied, “I carry a very heavy weight, child. A weight from yesterday.”

Emily tilted her small head and said quietly, “But Uncle Samuel, if you carry yesterday in your arms, how will you ever hold today?”

Her simple words struck Samuel like lightning through a clear sky. That evening, he sat alone on the riverbank, watching the water flow endlessly toward the open sea. The river never paused. It never looked back. It never clung to any stone or fallen leaf. It simply moved forward — always forward.

In that moment, Samuel understood something powerful and freeing. His past was like the river. And he had been trying to carry its heavy stones inside his little boat. But those stones served only one purpose — they weighed him down and kept him from moving.

From that quiet evening onward, Samuel made a firm decision. He would remember yesterday, but he would not carry it. He would honour his brother Thomas’s memory not by drowning in guilt, but by living fully, joyfully, and with a grateful heart.

The very next morning, Samuel woke early, took a long deep breath, stepped into his beloved boat, and smiled at the rising golden sun. For the first time in many long years, he felt wonderfully light. The boat rocked gently on the calm river, and Samuel felt peace wash over him like cool, clear water.

The past was behind him. The future was ahead. And today — today was a beautiful gift waiting to be unwrapped with open hands and an open heart.

If we look honestly at our own lives, it is easy to get stuck carrying the weight of yesterday — the mistakes we made, the losses we suffered, the words we wish we had never said. But the truth is simple and powerful: yesterday is a lesson, not a life sentence. The river teaches us to let go, to flow forward, and to embrace each new day without the heavy burden of what has already passed. Let go of what drags you down. Honour your past, but do not carry it. Because life is far too precious, and today is far too beautiful, to be held hostage by yesterday.
