Lila is a kind girl. She is ten years old and lives in a small village. Her house is blue with a big garden. Lila loves animals. She has a small dog named Spot. Spot is brown and loves to run.
One morning, Lila wakes up at seven o’clock. She puts on her red dress and shoes. She eats breakfast—bread with jam and milk. Spot sits near her and wags his tail. Lila smiles and says, “Good boy, Spot!”
After breakfast, Lila and Spot go to the garden. The sun is bright, and the flowers are red, yellow, and pink. Lila waters the flowers. Suddenly, she hears a soft sound. “Meow, meow.” It is a tiny kitten! The kitten is white with blue eyes. It looks scared and hungry.
Lila kneels down. “Hello, little kitten,” she says. The kitten is under a bush. It is shivering. Lila picks it up gently. The kitten is soft but very thin. “Oh, you are lost!” says Lila. Spot sniffs the kitten and barks softly.
Lila takes the kitten inside the house. She gives it a small bowl of milk. The kitten drinks fast. Lila laughs. “You are so hungry!” she says. Spot watches and stays calm. Lila makes a soft bed with an old blanket. The kitten curls up and sleeps.
Lila thinks, “Where is your home, kitten?” She wants to help. She makes a plan. She will ask her neighbors. Lila takes a piece of paper and writes: “Found: Small white kitten with blue eyes. Call Lila.” She draws a picture of the kitten. It looks cute.
Lila and Spot walk to the village. They visit three houses. At the first house, Mr. Brown says, “No, that’s not my kitten.” At the second house, Mrs. Green says, “I don’t have a cat.” At the third house, a boy named Sam opens the door. He is eight years old. He looks sad.
“Is this your kitten?” Lila asks. She shows Sam the picture. Sam’s eyes get big. “That’s Snowball!” he shouts. “She ran away two days ago!” Sam runs to Lila’s house with her. When he sees the kitten, he claps his hands. “Snowball! You’re safe!” The kitten wakes up and meows. Sam hugs her.
Sam says, “Thank you, Lila! I was so worried.” Lila smiles. “I’m happy Snowball is home,” she says. Sam gives Lila a cookie as a thank-you. Spot wags his tail. Lila and Spot go back home.
That night, Lila eats dinner with her mom and dad. She tells them about the kitten. Her mom says, “You are a kind girl, Lila.” Her dad says, “You did a good thing.” Lila feels proud.
Before bed, Lila looks at Spot. “We helped someone today,” she says. Spot barks softly. Lila goes to sleep and dreams of kittens and flowers. It is a happy day in the village.
