The Greedy Dog and the Lost Bone

Posted on March 16, 2026 by Selected Best Stories

Once upon a time, in a small dusty town along a winding country road, there lived a stray dog named Rex. He had no home, no collar, and no family. Every single day, Rex wandered through the busy town streets, trotting slowly past coffee carts, fruit stalls, and little corner shops, hoping someone would notice him.

Sometimes a kind baker would toss him a dry biscuit or a piece of leftover bread. Most nights Rex curled up with an empty belly, but he never stopped hoping. His golden-brown fur was a little thin, his paws a little dusty, but his warm brown eyes always held a flicker of hope.

One warm afternoon, Rex wandered near the town butcher shop. The smell of fresh meat drifted through the open door. Rex stood quietly at a respectful distance, his tail low, his eyes hopeful but careful. The butcher, a broad man in a white apron named Bill, was busy scrubbing his wooden counter. When he noticed the thin dog standing patiently outside, something softened in his heart.

Without saying a word, Bill reached for a large bone — thick, heavy, with plenty of meat still clinging to it — and tossed it toward Rex. The dog jumped in surprise, caught the bone cleanly in his mouth, and his eyes went wide with joy. His tail wagged furiously. This was the biggest treasure he had ever found.

But then a worried thought crossed his mind. If I eat this here, other street dogs will smell it. They will come running. I will have to fight or share.

So Rex made a quick decision. He turned around and began running toward the quiet meadow on the far side of town, where no one would disturb him. He sprinted past wooden fences and tall oak trees, past dry dirt paths and open green fields, until he reached a small wooden bridge. The bridge was narrow and crossed over a calm, clear river. Afternoon sunlight fell gently on the water, making it shimmer like polished silver.

Rex slowed his steps and carefully walked onto the bridge. Halfway across, he stopped. Something caught his eye below. He peered down into the sparkling river — and froze.

There was another dog staring right back at him. And that dog also had a large, meaty bone in its mouth.

Rex stared hard. Instead of feeling grateful for what he already had, his heart filled with greed. That bone looks even bigger than mine, he thought. If I take it, I’ll have double the food. I’ll be the luckiest dog in town.

He did not realize he was staring at his own reflection.

Rex growled softly. The dog in the water growled back. This made him furious. He took a deep breath, opened his mouth wide, and barked loudly.

Woof! Woof!

The bone slipped. It tumbled from his mouth and hit the water with a loud splash, sinking straight to the bottom.

The reflection shattered into ripples. The other dog vanished.

Rex stared at the empty water. He waited. He hoped. But the bone was gone forever, carried away by the gentle current. When the river grew still again, Rex looked down and saw one last reflection — a dog with an empty mouth, just like his heart.

He finally understood his mistake. By chasing more out of greed, he had lost everything he already had.

With a heavy heart and an empty stomach, Rex slowly walked back toward town. The sun was still warm on his fur — but his hunger felt heavier than ever.

Contentment is the greatest wealth. Be thankful for what you have. Greed will always cost you more than it gives.
