The sun sparkled on the dewy grass, making the backyard look like a field of tiny diamonds. It was a bright morning, and after days of gloomy rain, Mia and her big brother Jake were itching to play outside. “Mom, can we go explore the yard?” Jake called, bouncing on his toes.
“Hold on, you two!” Mom said from the kitchen, where she was mixing ingredients for her famous blueberry pie. “Your rooms are a mess. Clean them first, then you can play. A clean house means a happy house!”
Mia groaned, her shoulders slumping. “Cleaning? Ugh!” Jake nudged her with a grin. “Let’s make it fun—a race! Whoever cleans their room fastest wins the title of Super Speed Cleaner!”
Mia’s eyes lit up. “You’re on!” she shouted. “3… 2… 1… GO!”
Jake zoomed to his room, tossing clothes into the hamper like a basketball star. He fluffed his pillows and shoved his action figures into their box. Mia, meanwhile, was a whirlwind, stuffing stuffed animals under her bed and stacking books in a wobbly tower. “DONE!” Mia yelled, just as Jake was smoothing his blanket.
“No way!” Jake laughed, peeking into her room. “You’re fast, Mia! Let’s go tell Mom.”
They ran to the kitchen, where Mom was sliding her blueberry pie into the oven. The sweet smell of berries already filled the air. “Rooms clean?” Mom asked, raising an eyebrow. They nodded proudly. “Alright, go play in the yard. Stay close, and if you behave, you’ll get a big slice of pie later!”
Out in the yard, Jake and Mia turned into adventurers. They raced their bikes, pretending they were explorers in a jungle, dodging imaginary vines. They swung on the swings, soaring like superheroes. Hours flew by, and soon, a delicious blueberry scent wafted from the house.
“Mmm, the pie’s ready!” Mia said, her stomach growling. “Let’s check it out!”
They tiptoed inside, hearing Mom humming in the living room as she dusted. The pie sat on the counter by an open window, cooling in the breeze. But when they peeked at it, they froze. The pie was a disaster! The crust was crumbled, and gooey blueberry filling oozed everywhere.
“Whoa!” Mia gasped. “What happened to Mom’s pie?”
Jake’s eyes narrowed. “This is no ordinary pie mess. We’ve got a mystery on our hands, Mia. We need to solve it before Mom thinks we wrecked it!”
They darted outside to their secret detective headquarters—a shady spot under the big oak tree. Birds chirped and flitted above them, hopping from branch to branch. “Okay, Detective Mia,” Jake said, crossing his arms. “What could’ve happened?”
Mia tapped her chin. “Maybe… a squirrel sneaked in and nibbled it?”
Jake shook his head. “Squirrels don’t leave pies that messy. Let’s think bigger. What about… a raccoon?”
“We’d see paw prints,” Mia said, squinting. Then her eyes widened. “Wait! The window was open. What if birds smelled the pie and swooped in for a snack?”
Jake snapped his fingers. “Genius! Birds are always pecking at stuff. Let’s go look for clues.”
Back in the kitchen, they crept to the pie like spies, careful not to disturb the crime scene. There, next to the pie, was a tiny, three-toed footprint in the blueberry goo. “Aha!” Jake whispered. “That’s a bird footprint for sure!”
Mia pointed to a few crumbs on the windowsill. “Look! More evidence. Those sneaky birds must’ve flown in and had a pie party!”
Just then, Mom walked in, dusting her hands. “What’s going on, you two?” she asked, eyeing the pie. Her face fell. “Oh no, my pie!”
“We solved the mystery, Mom!” Mia blurted. “Birds did it! See the footprint? They came through the open window.”
Jake nodded. “We’re pretty sure they smelled your awesome pie and couldn’t resist.”
Mom laughed, shaking her head. “Well, you two are quite the detectives! I’ll put a screen on that window next time. Since the pie’s a goner, how about we go get ice cream instead?”
“Ice cream!” Mia and Jake cheered, high-fiving. They raced to the car, already dreaming of chocolate sundaes. Solving mysteries was hard work, but it sure was fun—and it came with the best rewards!
